An off-duty police officer was involved in a collision with a 60-year-old bicyclist in southern Indiana, resulting in the cyclist being airlifted to the hospital, authorities said. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon at the junction of Old State Road 56 and North Canton Road in Salem, WTHR reported.
According to WHAS11, the Salem Police Department and Indiana State Police (ISP) responded to the scene. An initial investigation by ISP suggests that the off-duty officer, driving west on Old State Road 56, was about to turn left onto North Canton Road but did not see the bicyclist who was traveling eastbound, resulting in the collision.
The identity of the officer, named Ofc. England, became public along with details about the crash. "Ofc. England, not seeing the bicyclist, started turning left on Canton and struck him," noted the reporting from WISH-TV. The victim, whose identity was not released, received immediate attention and was subsequently airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital. State police informed that the individual remains in stable condition.
While the investigation into the crash is still underway, state police have indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the incident. Further statements or details surrounding the consequences for Ofc. England, have not been released, as per WISH-TV.
