Big news in higher education for Ohioans, as The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College are joining forces to create a tuition-free 4-year degree completion program, dubbed Buckeye Bridge, according to OSU News. The initiative is a strategic move to make higher education more accessible, fulfilling a part of Ohio State President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr.'s vision of nurturing an educated citizenry by the year 2035.

This collaboration is aimed at helping low- to middle-income students who've earned an associate degree from Columbus State springboard directly into Ohio State without the burden of tuition and mandatory fees – and it seems to take on the critical task of workforce development and serving the Ohio state on a broader scale, "Buckeye Bridge will have a transformational impact," Columbus State President David Harrison told OSU News, adding that it'll equip students for in-demand careers and concurrently reinforce the local talent pool that's vital for economic growth.

The program is not just about the financial lift, it's also about giving students a tailored support network throughout their academic careers at Ohio State, support designed to break down barriers that might stand between students and their academic success. With over 1,000 students transferring annually from Columbus State to Ohio State, this number is expected to rise as Buckeye Bridge strengthens the well-established transfer connections between the two institutions.

To be part of this opportunity, students must be Ohio residents, have completed an associate degree at Columbus State, keep up with filing their FAFSA annually by the priority deadline and maintain full-time enrollment at Ohio State and come from a family with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $100,000 or less – Buckeye Bridge is slated to officially kick off for Columbus State graduates in the Spring of 2026 who are looking to start at Ohio State come the autumn season, wrapping up a straight shot to a bachelor's degree without the typical financial strain.
