Oregon is getting a major boost to its airport infrastructure with over $18 million in federal funds being directed to various airfields throughout the state. Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden have announced that the Federal Aviation Administration is investing these funds through the Airport Improvement Program, as reported by the U.S. Senator Office. This program supports vital upgrades to runways, taxiways, and other essential equipment, thereby enhancing the state's aviation capabilities.

This financial push comes as a significant benefit to community airports, which serve not only as gateways for local businesses but also crucial operational points during emergencies. "Our regional airports are vital hubs for Oregonians, supporting local businesses and providing essential lifelines during natural disasters," Merkley stated in a press release. "Investing in critical airport improvements like taxiways and lighting strengthens our infrastructure. I’ll continue to fight for federal investments to improve the efficiency, and safety of Oregon’s airports, benefitting the folks who rely on them for business, travel, and so much more," as stated by the U.S. Senator Office.

Notably, the Portland-Hillsboro Airport is on the receiving end of $7,095,483 for taxiway reconstruction. Tracy Williams, the Bend Airport Manager, told the U.S. Senator Office press office, "The Taxiway A and B Rehabilitation Project provides new taxiway edge lighting along both parallel taxiways to visibly enhance operational safety for aircraft on the ground." The investment also addresses upkeep to extend the lifespan of these crucial taxiways, displaying the city's commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient travel hub.

Scappoose Airport is also seeing a substantial infusion of funds, with $3,841,517 allocated for runway and taxiway lighting renovations. Port of Columbia County Airport Manager Lacey Tolles remarked on the significant impact of this grant: "This $3.8 million FAA grant, is a major investment in the future of Scappoose Airport. Rehabilitating the runway ensures our infrastructure remains safe, reliable, and positioned to meet the growing needs of general aviation in Columbia County," as per the U.S. Senator Office.

Other notable mentions include $3,930,621 directed to Bend Municipal Airport for runway reconstruction and taxiway lighting, benefiting local economies. Jonathan Teichert, Klamath Falls City Manager, expressed gratitude for the $3,134,969 grant allocated to the Crater Lake-Klamath Regional Airport for taxiway reconstruction, acknowledging both its essential role in maintaining a critical part of their infrastructure and its economic uplift by employing local contractors. As Oregon continues to develop and modernize its transportation infrastructure, these federal dollars exemplify the government's role in not merely maintaining but also bolstering the systems that keep the state, and its people, moving forward.
