The political tremors from the assassination of Charlie Kirk have reached Palmetto Bay, where local councilman Steve Cody faces intensifying demands to step down after his contentious social media posts came to light. NBC Miami reports that in the aftermath of Kirk's death, Cody had described the incident as "a fitting sacrifice" to the gun manufacturers, Smith & Wesson, in a post that was swiftly deleted.
The polarized reaction at a recent council meeting saw residents vocalizing their outrage and distrust, expressing sentiments that Cody's apology was inadequate. "I don't accept your apology because actions speak louder than words," one resident declared at the session, as reported by NBC Miami. Furthermore, officials at various levels, including U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, have joined the public in calling for Cody's resignation. Salazar remarked on social media, “The disgusted comments made by Steve Cody about Charlie Kirk’s assassination have disrupted the business of Palmetto Bay. Residents have lost trust in him and it will be nearly impossible to regain it. For the good of the Village, he must step down and let Palmetto Bay restore trust and move forward,” according to a WSVN report.
Cody, despite issuing an apology, stands firm against the growing resignation demands. “I wrote something that was very stupid but if every time a politician did something that was stupid, we’d never have anybody who ever be able to serve in office. I took it down, I apologized. I don’t intend on resigning,” he told reporters, as WSVN noted. The Palmetto Bay Village Council acted within their means, opting to censor Cody, request his resignation, and seek intervention from Governor Ron DeSantis.
Meanwhile, the repercussions of the tragedy continue to unfold across the state. Several individuals have been disciplined or dismissed from their positions due to their comments on Kirk's assassination. A faculty member at Florida Atlantic University was placed on administrative leave following concerning social media posts, whereas, the University of Miami parted ways with a neurologist for similar transgressions. Additionally, an employee at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was fired for making light of the assassination, the commission stating the individual's behavior was not aligned with their mission or values.
The Village Council has asked Governor DeSantis and the attorney general to launch an inquiry, showing their focus on accountability amid national attention on political rhetoric and violence. Meanwhile, Florida International University held a memorial service honoring Kirk, as his supporters sought to remember his legacy during this difficult time.
