Portland City Council has taken a decisive step towards enhancing citizen participation by revising its meeting schedule to be more inclusive and accessible. The Council now plans to hold four meetings a month, a change facilitated by Councilor Loretta Smith who championed the amendment after hearing community calls for greater accessibility. As reported by the Portland City Council's website, one of these sessions will be in the evening to accommodate working families and others who can't make daytime meetings.
The new ordinance passed with unanimous support from the council. It outlines that meetings will now occur at 9:30 a.m. on the first, second, fourth, and fifth Wednesdays of each month. To facilitate broader community participation, the third Wednesday meeting will commence at 6:00 p.m., ensuring those with daytime commitments can still attend. "This change is incredibly important because it means more opportunities for residents to get involved, ask questions, and have their voices heard," Councilor Smith remarked, acknowledging the significance of the new arrangement, according to the City of Portland.
Councilor Smith sees this update as a direct engagement with community desires. "Having our meetings every Wednesday will give us the continuity the community needs to access Portland City Council," she emphasized to the City of Portland.
