Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers were called into action Monday night as a car meetup in Southeast Portland escalated into a disruptive street takeover event. According to an official statement from the PPB, the gathering, which drew scores of car enthusiasts to the 5000 block of Southeast 82nd Avenue, took a turn around 7:30 p.m when officers attempted a traffic stop and found themselves encircled by spectators.
The crowd, initially drawn together by a shared passion for automobiles, reportedly launched fireworks at PPB personnel, necessitating a response from an additional approximately four dozen officers from other precincts. During the attempts to curb the takeover, one event organizer was approached by officers and decided to end the event. Nevertheless, certain participants lingered – prompting the police to make a series of traffic stops.
As detailed by the PPB, the intervention resulted in a total of eight traffic stops, four citations, and one vehicle tow. There was also one instance of an individual attempting to elude the police, and a firearm was seized during the course of the events. Alejandro Guillermo Ramirez, 27, of Portland, was arrested on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm in public, and reckless driving.
The PPB emphasized their ongoing dedication to the safety of the city's roadways and their intent to confront illegal street racing activities head-on. "PPB remains committed to ensuring the safety of local roadways and will continue to proactively address illegal street racing activity," underscored the bureau's news release.
