The legal community in San Diego is reflecting on the legacy left behind by Judge David M. Gill, who passed away this week at the age of 90. Serving on the bench for half a century, Gill became San Diego County's longest-tenured judge before his retirement last December. The San Diego Superior Court and his loved ones confirmed his death, noting his service not only to the court but to a range of community organizations, per FOX 5 San Diego.
Gill's appointment to the bench in 1974 marked the beginning of a legal career that would span 50 years and involve thousands of criminal cases—some among the most significant in the court’s history. According to his wife, as reported by 10News, Gill had been in failing health before his passing at his downtown San Diego residence.
In a tribute to the esteemed judge, the San Diego Superior Court lauded his "unwavering fairness, professionalism and a deep sense of justice." Per FOX 5 San Diego, the court's statement reflected Gill's qualifications: "He deeply cared about his role as a judge and wore his robe with humility and respect. He was admired and respected for his commitment to justice, his ethics, his patience, his ability to be fair and impartial and his strong belief in the jury system."
Gill's contributions extended beyond the courtroom. He was active in charitable work and community initiatives, including organizations such as the Salvation Army, the San Diego Law Library, the Lions Club, the National Institute of Advocacy, and the Boy Scouts of America.
