This weekend, San Francisco is gearing up for a nostalgic trip down memory lane with the return of the Muni Heritage Weekend. Scheduled for September 20 and 21, from 10 AM to 4 PM, the event promises a unique blend of historical exploration and family fun, free of charge. Hosted by the SFMTA and the Market Street Railway Museum, at 77 Steuart Street by Don Chee Way Plaza and adjacent to the Market Street Railway Museum, the event celebrates the storied past and present of city transit.
Thrill-seekers and history buffs will have the opportunity to ride on a fleet of vintage streetcars and buses, according to SFMTA's post. The rides offered include the historic Streetcar #1 from 1912, recognized as the first publicly owned streetcar in the U.S., and the quaint 'Dinky' car 578 from 1896, San Francisco’s oldest operating streetcar. Adding a dash of international flair to the local history, attendees can also ride the Boat tram #233 from Blackpool, England – an open-air vehicle that promises a unique ride along the Embarcadero shuttle loop to Pier 39 and back. Rides on all the featured vehicles are free during the Muni Heritage Weekend.
Amid the clanging of historic cable cars and the rumble of old buses, visitors will find more than just rides awaiting them. The event is packed with interactive exhibits and family-friendly activities. Participants can clamber aboard a retired, motorized cable car, pose for that quintessential San Francisco photo, or explore the likes of a 1969 Muni GMC Coach and even an '80s-era Gillig bus courtesy of SamTrans. A special appearance by the Greyhound Scenic Cruiser from the Pacific Bus Museum adds another layer to the rich tapestry of transit lore on display.
According to SFMTA's announcement, the event isn't just an homage to bygone modes of travel; it's an immersive experience. From hands-on games to interactive booths, a rich palette of activities is suitable for all ages. For the collectors and aficionados, the Muni Heritage Weekend will also mark the debut of a Muni Store pop-up, offering attendees a chance to snag some memorabilia.
