The National Weather Service in San Francisco updated the public on the latest weather updates this Thursday. Forecasts predict the return of drier and warmer conditions on Friday and Saturday. However, San Franciscans should prepare for another bout of unsettled weather on Sunday.
In the short term, Thursday's weather should be the last day of rain chances around the Bay Area before the upper low that has brought the region its recent showers moves on. According to the National Weather Service, "A double-barrel upper low continues to spin over far NorCal" embedded within a positively tilted upper-level trough. Despite some storms rumbling north and east with better dynamics today, chances for thunderstorms look low in the North Bay, as point soundings indicate a "weak cap/inversion around 650mb." What remains of any precipitation is expected to taper off as the low and trough move eastward, making way for a redeveloping marine layer.
Towards the end of the week and into the weekend, a shortwave ridge behind the departing upper low signals warmer and drier conditions. Inland and Central Coast residents can expect high temperatures reaching the 70s and 80s, with some areas potentially hitting the 90s. A passing front on Sunday will cause a slight temperature dip and could bring showers in the North Bay, which are anticipated to disperse before making a significant impact.
The aviation sector will experience marine layer patterns typical of this time of year, with MVFR (Marginal Visual Flight Rules) conditions anticipated through late morning before a return to VFR (Visual Flight Rules). The National Weather Service reports, "Confidence is moderate in the timing of stratus clearing this morning." Onshore winds are expected to intensify in the afternoon and evening, with gusts possibly reaching up to 21 knots at SFO.
