Yesterday, a collision on Grand Traverse Bay left authorities searching for a runaway pontoon boat. The Detroit News reported that the incident occurred when a 26-foot boat was struck by the pontoon, which was operating without lights. The boat that was hit was able to safely reach the shore with assistance from the Grand Traverse Sheriff's deputies after the pontoon boat, having collided with it, continued north.
According to the social media post by the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office, the victim, unable to describe the offending vessel, called 911 and donned a life jacket immediately following the incident. Deputies noted that damage is likely present on the left front of the pontoon boat.
No injuries were reported, and the Coast Guard has joined in the search for the pontoon boat. The Sheriff's Office has issued a call for information for anyone who might have details about the boat or the collision, inviting tips to be directed to their marine division's non-emergency number or sent via email to Deputy J. King, who is heading the investigation.
