In a candid discussion about America's future in the realm of artificial intelligence, Senator Mark Kelly opened up to Axios at their AI+ Summit. During the conversation, he unveiled the AI for America roadmap, a strategic plan designed to ensure AI advancements benefit the entire nation, not merely the powerhouse tech firms.
The senator highlighted the AI Horizon Fund as a crucial element of the proposal, suggesting it be seen as a collaborative effort between AI entities and the public sector. "This should be thought of as a partnership between AI companies, the companies that benefit from AI, and the public. So, a private-public partnership where they [AI companies] have a contribution," Kelly said, according to a statement obtained by his Senate press office. He emphasized that these investments shouldn't unfairly burden taxpayers, asserting that AI firms need to actively invest in the infrastructure pivotal to their own prosperity.
Senator Kelly's proposal places a strong emphasis on U.S. leadership in the global AI race. Acknowledging the competitive edge posed by China in technology, Kelly warned that without the right framework, the U.S. risks falling behind. "I think that AI is going to be huge for our economy. And we have a competition here with […] another rather huge country out there, China, that we often compete with in technology. And we've got some challenges we're going to face. And if we don’t have the right framework in place to lead the world in AI, they will, and we will fall behind," he elaborated in the press release.
Kelly was adamant about the timeliness of the AI for America strategy, pushing to proactively craft a vision for the nation's future. He referenced the CHIPS and Science Act as a model, pointing to the benefits of strategic investment in industry. "We don’t want to wait another five or ten years. We need to have a plan for what this country is going to look like ten, twenty, thirty, years in the future and that starts now," he told Axios.
As far as the workforce is concerned, Kelly stressed the significance of developing comprehensive retraining programs to prevent large-scale job displacement. "The biggest thing is coming up with a plan for how you’re going to retrain people for other jobs. We do not want to find ourselves in a situation where 10 million people have lost their jobs to AI, and they don’t have a good option. That’s not good for any of us," Kelly asserted during the summit, an insight highlighted in the press release.
