Get ready to step back into the heart of Colorado Springs history with a community celebration that's all about roots and reminiscence. The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is bringing the Conejos Neighborhood together once again for a reunion that's set to revive the spirit of one of the city's most historic areas. This free, family-friendly gathering takes place on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and everyone’s invited to join the festivities.
The event, notably not confined to history buffs, promises a full day of entertainment ranging from mouthwatering food trucks to toe-tapping live music, courtesy of Mariachi Lobos. Ballet Folklórico de la Raza is also scheduled to perform, sharing dances that weave through the tapestry of local tradition and culture. Not to mention, the event includes a craft corner for creative souls and a car show for those who appreciate vintage rides with a side of nostalgia.
It's not just about fun and games, though. The reunion spotlights an exhibit that has been capturing hearts for the past five years. The CSPM unveiled "Una Familia Grande: The Conejos Neighborhood Project" to pay homage to the deep-rooted connections former residents hold with their lineage and locale. Leah Davis Witherow, the museum's curator of history, emphasized the importance of this exhibit, stating, "Through their artifacts, photographs and stories, we put this once vibrant neighborhood back on the map and highlight their importance in our community’s history," as per the City of Colorado Springs.
As obtained by the City of Colorado Springs, the curator further extended her pride in hosting the event: "We are honored to host and celebrate these neighbors once again."
