A high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle culminated in a collision with law enforcement on Saturday, with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office announcing the suspect's arrest. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, a FLOCK Safety camera system first detected the vehicle, a silver 2007 Jeep Liberty reported as stolen, in the Stratmoor Valley area.
Deputies were unable to find the Jeep initially, but received a new alert around 11:45 AM placing it near Maxwell Street and Highway 85. The suspect, Arturo Velasquez, was already on a "Be on the Lookout" (BOLO) advisory as "armed and dangerous," with additional notes of parole and known gang affiliations. A unit from the Fountain Police Department located the car, and with the help of Sheriff's Office deputies, staged a Tactical Intervention Method (TIM) Contact Block at a gas station. However, before the operation could be finalized, Velasquez reversed into the police unit and attempted to escape, leading to a collision with a sheriff's patrol vehicle.
The collision ended the pursuit, and officers arrested 29-year-old Velasquez and the vehicle's other occupant, 34-year-old Ariana Valverde. A subsequent search of the Jeep revealed approximately 32.4 grams of methamphetamine, adding drug possession to the charges against Velasquez. Both were booked into the El Paso County Jail, with Velasquez facing multiple charges, including Motor Vehicle Theft, Attempted Second-Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, and Attempted Felony Eluding. Valverde was charged with Motor Vehicle Theft, Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, and Resisting Arrest, all of which were held on a $3,000 bond.
El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal weighed in on the incident, "This was a dangerous situation which could have ended much differently," as per the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. Roybal praised the coordinated effort between agencies and the aid of FLOCK Safety cameras in averting risk to the public and deputies. The Sheriff stressed the importance of such technological tools and strategic partnerships in ensuring community safety.
