Earlier yesterday, an apartment blaze at the Retreat at Greenbriar Apartments in southwest Atlanta left one person hospitalized and four others in need of onsite medical attention. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that the fire began around 6:30 a.m., engulfing two units before firefighters managed to contain it. One individual was subsequently taken to a local hospital, while the remaining four were treated at the scene.
In a testament to community spirit, residents awoke to the smoke and did not hesitate to rouse their neighbors, alerting them to the encroaching danger. Raymond Gotel, who resides in the affected building, told Atlanta News First, "I had to make sure. We all family in this one building right here, so I had to make sure we all straight". His sentiment echoed the overall mood as tenants worked together to ensure each other's safety.
The identity of the hospitalized resident has not been released, but officials confirmed that the injuries were non-life-threatening. Atlanta Fire and Rescue personnel emphasized the importance of fire safety and the use of smoke alarms. AFRD Capt. Andrew Anderson remarked on the value of neighborliness in such emergencies, saying, "If you can save someone, it’s always a blessing, and it helps us stay oriented."
The investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing, with involvement from arson investigators, Georgia Power, and Atlanta Gas. Meanwhile, the American Red Cross has stepped in to assist families shaken by the incident, providing relief to those who have been temporarily displaced by the fire.
