An attempted armed robbery in Oakland led to a high-speed crash in Hayward yesterday, landing three suspects in the hospital and causing injury to another individual involved in a collision. The incident began near International and Durant Avenue at the Durant Square Mall, where, according to ABC7 News, masked suspects attempted to rob an armed security guard.
The confrontation escalated rapidly when the suspects demanded the security guard drop their firearm, prompting the guard to, "fearing for their life," fire shots in their direction, as stated in a report by KRON4. None were hit, but the situation forced the suspects to drive away from the scene quickly. Oakland Police then attempted to conduct a traffic stop; however, the suspects' vehicle sped off instead to comply, initiating a pursuit tracked by a police helicopter.
The chase ended when the suspects' car collided with another vehicle in Hayward near Hesperian Boulevard, near Chabot College. Aerial footage revealed the aftermath, showing one car wrapped around a light post, as described by ABC7 News. "I'm gonna need Code 3 medical! They just high speed collided. Drivers door is open, I don't see anybody out yet and vehicle is smoking," was heard from the police scanner traffic following the crash.
Oakland Police Department reports that the three injured suspects were taken to a hospital with injuries varying from minor to critical. Two of the suspects have been identified as juveniles. A person from the other involved vehicle was also transported to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries is presently unknown. The vehicle description has not been released by OPD, which is now looking for "at least two additional suspects in connection with the attempted robbery," KRON4 reported, further stating the suspects' car was followed by a helicopter beyond city limits because the individuals were armed.
