An armed man was fatally shot by Broward County Sheriff's Office deputies after a standoff at a vacant home in Pompano Beach, which lasted for several hours yesterday. The Broward Sheriff's Office received a call about a suspicious individual, leading deputies to the 2300 block of Bay Drive, where the man, upon their arrival, ran inside the home and barricaded himself, NBC Miami reported.
In an attempt to safely resolve the situation, deputies deployed multiple drones and a K-9 unit. However, the suspect, not only shot at one of the drones but also attacked the K-9 with it. "We deployed our K-9 into the environment to try to establish whether or not he was alive so we could render aid and things of that nature," Sheriff Gregory Tony told Local10, describing the efforts to make contact with the man.
The initial reports indicated that the suspect had possibly been trespassing, and when negotiations and other tactics to coax him out failed, a SWAT team was called to the scene. According to Sheriff Tony's statement, the suspect had made threats to shoot the deputies, leading to an escalated sense of danger in the confrontation. CBS Miami described the hours-long effort to negotiate with the individual and the deployment of the SWAT team as part of the law enforcement's protocol in such incidents.
The standoff culminated when SWAT officers were forced to fire at the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The K-9, which was attacked by the suspect, is expected to recover fully, but was taken to an animal hospital for X-ray evaluation, Sheriff Tony added. The suspect's identity has not been disclosed, but officials confirmed he was a convicted felon known to have a criminal history. As per standard procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be conducting an investigation into the shooting, as further substantiated by crime scene activity reported by CBS Miami.
The BSO officials reiterated that no deputies were harmed during the incident.
