Yesterday, a HazMat incident at Naval Station Everett prompted a robust response from local fire departments and hazardous materials teams. A suspicious package discovered in the health clinic at the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit led to the evacuation of potentially exposed individuals and a gross decontamination effort to mitigate risks. According to details from the City of Everett, none of those evaluated at the scene showed signs of illness or injury, though some were sent to the hospital as a precaution.
Evacuated after the unknown substance's discovery, clinic personnel stood by as the Snohomish County Hazardous Materials Response Team, alongside regional fire agencies including South County Fire and Marysville Fire District, assessed the situation. The response escalated to a third alarm HazMat level to ensure ample manpower on the ground, adequately prepping for potential threats that might have stemmed from this incident.
The collaborative efforts of the responding teams paid off when, after testing, the substance was deemed nonhazardous—an inorganic material, per the findings shared by Everett officials. The clinic, after being shut down temporarily during the ordeal, reopened once the all-clear was given. Personnel taken to the hospital as a precaution returned, with the station resuming normal operations shortly thereafter.
