A tragic incident unfolded on Highway 402 in Grant County this past weekend when a motorcycle crash claimed the life of a Tacoma man. According to the Oregon State Police, the accident occurred last Saturday, August 30, as Phillip Westly Bunger, 63, was navigating eastbound on the highway at approximately 1:42 p.m.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Bunger's maroon Honda motorcycle veered off the roadway for reasons still undetermined, hitting loose gravel on the highway's shoulder before tipping and rolling multiple times. Tragically, he was unable to regain control of the vehicle before it ended its tumble, fatal to his person. The Oregon State Police reported that Bunger was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Fellow travelers on Highway 402 saw little disruption from the incident, as the roadway remained open while law enforcement conducted their on-scene investigation. The response to and examination of the crash site involved not just the Oregon State Police, but the help of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation, too, which were both instrumental in aiding the aftermath of the event.
