A tranquil afternoon was shattered by gunfire in Frayser, when a 16-year-old male was pronounced dead at the hospital following a shooting incident. The violence unfolded near the Family Tire Shop at 2731 Range Line Road around 1 p.m. yesterday, Fox13 Memphis reports.
Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to the scene and subsequently detained two juveniles, one of whom, a 17-year-old, now faces a second-degree murder charge. The other minor has since been released. Running the store next to the crime scene, Darius Mosley, knew the victim well and shared that the young teen worked at the tire shop. Mosley, preparing to give the teen a dollar in exchange for the 75 cents lent to him the day before, recalled the moment saying, "as soon as I was getting ready to walk up over there to give him a whole solid dollar, that’s when the shots rang out," according to a WREG.
Initial investigations by MPD suggest that the incident was preceded by an argument involving the three individuals. The locality, known for the hum of daily commerce, instead rang with the sounds of a tragic event, disrupting the fabric of the community. The ongoing investigation by the authorities seeks to unravel the circumstances that led to this untimely death. Anybody with information regarding the incident is encouraged to step forward and contact authorities at 901-528-CASH, as per Local Memphis coverage.
The community of Frayser must now contend with the pained reality of a young life cut short and the stark ripple effects such violence impress upon the hearts of all who bear witness. Darius Mosley also imparted a somber reflection on the victim's potential, "I don’t know what he had going on, all I know is everybody has a chance to change, no matter what you got going on in life, you have a chance to change," he told WREG. As the community grieves and investigators piece together the narrative of Wednesday's violence, the question of what could have been done differently, or what interventions might have prevented this outcome, linger with heavy hearts.
The Memphis Police Department reminds anyone with information relating to this case to contact CrimeStoppers. This is an open investigation, and officials are determined to gather as much evidence as necessary in order to proceed with the judicial process for the victim, the accused, and community at large.
