Texas has officially appointed a new cyber sheriff to stand guard against the unceasing barrage of digital threats. Governor Greg Abbott has named Timothy James “TJ” White as Chief of the newly minted Texas Cyber Command. This announcement came following a legislative push to bolster the state's defenses against cyberattacks, which, according to a statement provided by the Office of the Texas Governor, occur "thousands of times every single second of every single day."
According to the Office of the Texas Governor, Abbott underscored the critical need for robust cybersecurity, stating, "Texas needs strong cybersecurity experts to lead our fight against these attacks, often from hostile foreign adversaries like China, Russia, and Iran." White, an admiral who has honorably served for nearly four decades, has been chosen to take up this mantle until February 2027, bringing with him an arsenal of military and cybersecurity experience. The Texas Cyber Command has been strategically formed to quickly and effectively coordinate with state, local, and federal entities in safeguarding Texan cyberspace.
Admiral White comes to the position with an extensive military background. After enlisting in the Navy back in 1983 and retiring honorably in 2020, his career spanned roles such as the Commander of the U.S. Fleet Cyber Command, TENTH Fleet, and Navy Space Command, as well as the Director of Intelligence for the United States Indo-Pacific Command. His academic accolades include a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and two Master of Science degrees in fields relevant to strategy and technology.
Governor Abbott, keen to emphasize White's qualifications, noted, "Admiral White's decades of honorable military service to our country combined with his cybersecurity expertise makes him the leader we need at the helm of the Texas Cyber Command," as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor. Furthermore, White's ties to the cybersecurity community extend beyond the military, as a founder of OneNetworkConnection, LLC, a Professor-of-Practice at the Naval Postgraduate School, and a trustee for the Southwest Research Institute. With such a decorated professional past, White is to be the frontline figure in the Lone Star State's effort to preempt and to protect against cyber offences.
The initiative to establish Texas Cyber Command was part of Governor Abbott's State of the State Address earlier this year. It was subsequently signed into law in June, during the 89th Regular Legislative Session, showcasing the urgency and high priority Texas places on cyber defense in today's increasingly connected and virtually contested landscape.
