A tragic collision last week on US Highway 90 in Iberia Parish has resulted in the demise of 19-year-old Thibodaux resident Colbi Blanchard, as confirmed by Louisiana State Police Troop I. Blanchard had been the front seat passenger in a Ford Fusion that collided with a stationary commercial truck on Tuesday, and despite immediate medical attention and being properly restrained, succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident on Saturday.
Blanchard's vehicle, revealed to be a 2014 Ford Fusion traveling westbound, inexplicably veered from the travel lane on US Hwy 90 into the painted gore area, hitting a stopped 2019 International Commercial Motor Vehicle, both drivers sustained injuries, though minor for the truck driver, and they along with Blanchard were transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. The crash, which occurred just before 8:00 a.m., is still under investigation; driver fatigue, a menace as dangerous as impairment by alcohol or drugs, is considered a likely factor.
The aftermath of the crash has prompted Louisiana State Police to issue a warning about the dangers of driver fatigue, highlighting that it is a significant contributing factor to roadway incidents. "Falling asleep behind the wheel can lead to dangerous situations, much like the effects of alcohol or drugs," the police stated. In addition, they stressed the importance of avoiding stops in unsafe areas, mentioning that the commercial vehicle was stationary in the gore zone, a hazardous location that can obstruct traffic and heighten collision risks.
