Lincoln Middle School in Berwyn, a suburb of Chicago, became the scene of a tragic shooting on Tuesday afternoon, leading to the cancellation of classes the following day. According to NBC Chicago, the incident, which occurred just after 4 p.m., involved a gunman who approached a car, opened fire into it, and ultimately turned the gun on himself.
The violence resulted in three fatalities; however, no students from the school were involved. Dr. Michelle Smith, Superintendent of Berwyn North School District 98, clarified in a statement, "This was a domestic incident and there is no ongoing threat to the school community." Despite the absence of an ongoing threat, the proximity of the shooting to the school led to heightened caution. The school provided social workers and counselors to support students in the aftermath, says Smith's note.
At the time of the shooting, most of the students had already left the premises for the day, but reports indicate that children participating in after-school activities were safe and accounted for. The Berwyn Police Department responded to shots fired near the school, where they discovered a man firing a rifle into another vehicle. The assailant also shot at the officers, who managed to evade injury by not returning fire, as per the details from the Chicago Sun-Times.
"At this time we're still working on identifying all the victims involved," Berwyn police Cmdr. Michael Fellows stated in a news conference. Police are investigating the incident, treating it as "domestic-related" and isolated. The identity of the shooter and the relationship between the individuals involved have not been released, adding a layer of complexity to an already heart-wrenching event.
Local authorities are urging the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Meanwhile, the police are continuing their investigation to piece together the details of this devastating occurrence. More information is expected to be divulged as the investigation progresses.
