In a recent incident at The Squeeze Juice Bar & Restaurant in North Miami Beach, an individual was caught on camera brazenly stealing a tip jar that contained over $80. The theft occurred last Friday and has left the local business community shaken. According to 7News, Louis Alexis, the manager of The Squeeze, detailed how the customer appeared to calmly eat a burger before taking the opportunity to swipe the jar when staff were momentarily away.
Surveillance footage released by the juice bar on Instagram showed the man, clad in a white shirt and grey sweatpants, planning to sneakily grab the jar when no one was watching. "So, it was Friday afternoon around 5:30. Our cashier was here serving," Alexis told 7News. "She finished serving the customer whom you saw sitting down eating a burger, and I guess she went to the back to wash dishes or grab something, and when she came back, actually Saturday morning, she realized that the tip jar was gone."
The act has struck a chord in the service industry, especially given the current economic landscape with challenging market conditions. The Squeeze Juice Bar highlighted the importance of tip money for their staff, emphasizing its role in their survival amid rising costs and inflation. “We’re already in one of the hardest times the restaurant business has ever faced … Rising costs, inflation and businesses barely surviving. Our staff shows up everyday working long hours, so when someone has the nerve to steal tips from our staff, it cuts deep. Those tips aren’t extra, they’re survival,” the business mentioned in a statement, as per Local 10.
The manager also reflected on the weight of the crime, reiterating the effort that goes into maintaining the service they provide. "Right now, the times are extremely hard with the cost of everything — cost of permits, cost of fees," Louis Alexis mentioned in the interview to spectacularly capture the struggle to 7News. "Sometimes we sacrifice our own personal rent, our own personal well-being, to make sure that our staff is able to pay their bills, as honest business owners, so for them to take her tips after she worked a very long day was very disheartening." The identity of the thief remains unknown, and the business and local authorities are seeking help from the public. Anyone with information is urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS, and remember, informants may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward up to $5,000.
