Motorists who travel through Jasper County should plan to adjust their routes as Missouri Route 171 will be completely closed at the intersection with Missouri Route 96 west of Carthage starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, and continuing through Friday, Sept. 26. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), this closure is to allow contractor crews to pour concrete for the new Route 96 bridge deck over Route 171.
The scheduled work is a component of a $2.8 million project to replace the existing bridge with an upgraded structure that will stand slightly higher and extend 12 feet longer than the preexisting bridge. The intent is to enhance the bridge for future traffic demands. To minimize disruptions, traffic will be redirected to use Route 171 on- and off-ramps in both directions. However, drivers can expect to encounter slowed traffic and delays and are advised to find alternate routes where possible.
Signage and message boards will be in place to inform drivers as they approach the closure, helping to manage the flow and reduce confusion. Commuters and residents can also look up to six days ahead for updates on traffic impacts by checking MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for the latest road closings. Though the schedule is subject to influence by weather or potential scheduling conflicts, the project's completion is anticipated by November 19.
Local authorities are encouraging travelers to plan ahead to ensure they can safely and efficiently navigate the area during these two days of construction. As with all major infrastructure projects, this temporary inconvenience is aimed to eventually lead to a safer and smoother travel experience.
