In a somber gathering, Phoenix headquarters of Turning Point USA became an impromptu memorial after the assassination of its founder, Charlie Kirk. According to a FOX 10 Phoenix report, supporters have been visiting the nonprofit's office, bringing flowers and signs to pay their respects. Kirk, a conservative figure and ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot dead at a campus event at Utah Valley University.
Kirk's impact on young conservatives was evident from the testimonials of his supporters. Arizona State University student Anders Rae, in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix, remarked, "I first saw his clips on Instagram, and his message and what he was teaching really stood out to me and told me it's OK to be who I am." The loss, felt deeply by his followers, also reflected on his role as a public figure encouraging open discussions across political lines. Hayden Cooper, another ASU student, told FOX 10 Phoenix, Kirk "meant a lot, not just to me, but the younger generations."
Details about the tragic incident were sparse but indicate a targeted attack. The AP News reported that Kirk was assassinated by a single gunshot while speaking at an outdoor event. Utah's Governor Spencer Cox called it a "political assassination." The FBI is involved in the investigation, with FBI Director Kash Patel initially announcing a suspect's apprehension, only to later clarify that the person had been questioned and released.
The location of the shooting has been a subject of controversy. UVU faced criticism for hosting Kirk, with nearly 1,000 signatures gathered in an online petition against his appearance. Nonetheless, the university stood by its commitment to free speech. Following the attack, the university released a statement affirming its principles but undoubtedly, the campus is now a scene of mourning and a pivotal moment in the intensifying climate of political violence in the United States.
As the investigation unfolds, Turning Point USA released a statement mourning their founder, "It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that Charles James Kirk has been murdered by a gunshot," as mentioned on FOX 10 Phoenix. They continued, calling for prayers and privacy for Kirk's family in a message filled with sorrow over the loss of their leader.
