In a significant crackdown on immigration-related offenses, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona has charged 218 individuals. These charges, ranging from illegal re-entry to smuggling, were part of a weeklong enforcement operation spanning from August 30 to September 5, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Arizona.
Of those charged, 100 cases involved aliens illegally reentering the United States, while 107 others were accused of illegal entry. Additionally, 11 individuals have been linked to smuggling charges within the state. Federal agencies, including ICE ERO, ICE Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Border Patrol, and others, referred these cases or supported them, in what seems to be an escalated effort to deter unlawful immigration activities.
Among the highlighted cases, the United States v. Jose Uriel Meraz-Aguilar stands out, where a 20-year-old Mexican citizen was charged with Transportation of an Illegal Alien. According to details from the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Arizona, Meraz-Aguilar was caught south of Dateland, Arizona, having entered the US near Monument 179. He was allegedly paid by the Salazares Cartel to guide individuals through the desert, a journey that led to some needing rescue and medical treatment due to dehydration and heat exhaustion.
In another case, termed United States v. Edwuin Lucino Hernandez-Cordero, a Mexican citizen was charged with Conspiracy to Transport an Illegal Alien. Hernandez-Cordero's July 2025 arrest for transporting five illegal aliens unveiled his involvement with smuggling operations connected to stash houses in Glendale and Phoenix, which he allegedly ran for profit.
The DOJ has mobilized Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood programs to reinforce this objective. As per the official press release, while a criminal complaint initiates prosecution, it is important to underline that all defendants maintain the presumption of innocence until potentially proven guilty in a court of law.
