In a solemn tradition now entering its 17th year, Union University will open its arms once more to those who bear the weight of loss, as the Remember Me Walk convenes on September 29 to bring together families and individuals who have journeyed through the shadow of homicide loss. According to a recent Union University news release, the event offers a space where memories of those taken prematurely can be shared and cherished among those who understand the unique grief that accompanies such tragedies.
Starting with a communal meal at the Carl Grant Events Center at 5:30 p.m., for which no registration is necessary, survivors are provided an opportunity to momentarily lay down their burdens over shared food, as reported by the hosting university's announcement; the meal then transitions into a brief program that precedes a walk around the Great Lawn, a physical manifestation of the journey of remembrance that each participant walks every day. The event is not just a commemoration but an act of unity, where the bereaved come together not only in remembrance but in collective acknowledgment of each other's loss and resilience within the union community.
The Union School of Social Work’s Center for Just and Caring Communities is the sponsor behind this poignant event, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the aftershock of violence that ripples through families and communities. They have opened the door for individuals grappling with this form of grief to find common ground, support, and recognition of their loved ones' lives that were cut short. Cheryl Hall, associated with the event, is the contact for those seeking further details, reachable at [email protected] or by phone at (731) 661-5554, as per the university's notification.
