In an initiative that merges collegiate pride with regional flavors, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has made its foray into the gourmet condiment market with the introduction of "Miner Magic Gourmet BBQ Sauce." The sauce, which features the distinctive taste of Hatch chile jalapenos, is the latest venture by UTEP Athletics into branded edible products. It follows in the footsteps of the institution’s previous offering, Miner Brew, which was developed in collaboration with DeadBeach Brewery.
As reported by KFOX-TV, the new BBQ sauce is available at the UTEP bookstore, ready to enhance the culinary experience of football enthusiasts as they prepare for the season's games. Jim Senter, UTEP Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed confidence in the new product, stating that partnering with The Jank, a barbecue sauce company, was an effective way to represent the Southwest's cultural essence. According to KFOX-TV, the release could not have been timelier, aligning with the anticipation of college football season.
Moreover, the UTEP collaboration with Jank BBQ aims to extend the reach of the university's brand beyond academia and into the community's daily life. The Jank’s owner, Lamar Jones, emphasized the sauce’s health-conscious attributes. "No corn syrup, gluten-free, no MSG across the board, and when you talk about quality, legacy, community, UTEP was a no-brainer," he told KTSM. The outreach effort appears to be comprehensive, with the sauce not only stocked on campus premises but also made available for online purchase, widening its footprint.
Senter's strategy seems to be one of expansive brand integration, as revealed in an El Paso Times article, which noted the athletic department's desire to maximize the number of branded consumables. This aligns with efforts to support the university and the broader El Paso community. The Miner Magic sauce joins a lineup that is already being retailed at Albertsons grocery stores in the area, a distribution breadth that could contribute to the sustainability of UTEP's branding efforts, as per the El Paso Times.
