UTEP Volleyball is gearing up to make a statement this weekend, as they host the Sun City Classic and look to continue their hot start. The undefeated Miners (6-0) are facing a tough roster of opponents, including the nationally ranked No. 24 UCLA Bruins, as well as Texas Southern and Oral Roberts. According to UTEP Miners, the first serve against UCLA is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, which marks the first time in program history that UTEP has hosted a nonconference nationally-ranked opponent in nearly a decade.
The Miners are not just looking to play; they aim to secure their first-ever win against a Top 25 team. Although the team's record against ranked opponents stands at 0-22, their current performance could be a sign of history to possibly change. UTEP's offense has been particularly strong, striking a .307 team hitting percentage that ranks them 12th nationally and first in Conference USA. "The Miners have established themselves at the net with 46.0 team blocks through six matches," stated the UTEP Miners. Notably, Danika Washington is leading the team with a formidable 21.0 rejections.
UTEP is showcasing some serious talent across the roster. Middle blocker Kaya Weaver, who leads the team with a .382 hitting percentage, was named the 2025 Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year. Alongside Weaver, three other players from UTEP have also graced the Preseason All-CUSA Team, demonstrating just how respected the Miners are within their conference. Their performance so far this season, with a spotless record, reflects these preseason predictions.
The tournament is not only an opportunity for the Miners to demonstrate their mettle, but also serves as a platform for UTEP's 915 Campaign, a fundraising effort aiming to sign up 915 members by September 15th to support UTEP student-athletes. "Fans can support the Miners by contributing as little as $9.15 per month to UTEP's Talent Acquisition Fund (TAF)," encouraged the team announcement, as per UTEP Miners. The fund plays a crucial role in ensuring the continued success and competitiveness of UTEP Athletics.
