In the early hours of Saturday, on a bustling Worcester street known for its nightlife, chaos broke into violence when a fight erupted in a public parking lot on Water Street. According to a social media post by the Worcester Police Department, their officers arrived at the scene to find a large crowd that was both clamorous and animated, their focus pointed towards the unfolding scuffle.
Details provided by the department paint a vivid picture of the incident, describing how a male individual was witnessed falling to the ground while a female was seen making an aggressive beeline towards him; this, just as law enforcement officials were making their way out of their cruiser, navigating through the maze of onlookers that had swelled in the lot. After intervening, authorities reported that the woman, later identified as 22-year-old Makayli Melendez of Worcester, attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended and placed under arrest.
While officers rendered aid to the male victim, who had sustained a stab wound to his left abdomen, he claimed, as per the police release, to have never seen Melendez prior to the attack. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, and a pocketknife, which is presumably the weapon used in the assault, was recovered from the scene by the authorities.
Melendez now faces charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct as investigation by the WPD’s Detective Bureau continues to piece together the events of that fateful night.
