A recent incident at Overton Park has led to the detention of a woman after she allegedly rammed her vehicle into a Memphis Police Department (MPD) squad car. According to Action News 5, the police were responding to a false alarm regarding shots fired around 5:14 pm when they discovered that the reported gunfire was in fact a golf ball striking a vehicle.
The woman, after talking to the officers, left the scene only to return later and purposefully crash into the squad car, which had an officer inside. Though initially responding to shots fired, officers were quick to ascertain the woman's car, which was the target of a mere golf ball, not a bullet. After departing momentarily, she came back to execute the deliberate act of aggression against the stationary vehicle of law enforcement.
Following the crash, Local Memphis reported the officer involved sustained injuries but was in non-critical condition. The officer, witnessing the incoming threat, yet unable to evade the vehement charge, was taken to the hospital shortly thereafter.
Witnesses on the scene observed the aftermath of the collision— a white minivan with significant damage to the passenger side of the MPD squad car. According to FOX13 Memphis, airbags were deployed and there was a possible break in the car's front axle, suggesting the impact's ferocity. An officer, managing somehow to extricate himself from the mangled steel, was seen limping away from the vehicular wreckage.
