A woman is dead following a fire that broke out early this morning in an apartment complex on Fairington Road in DeKalb County, as firefighters responded to the scene after 1 a.m. In a tragic turn of events, they discovered her inside a bathroom and she was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, a man managed to escape the fire by using a back window of the apartment building. He was found outside the unit and taken to an area hospital, his condition remains undisclosed.
While the full scope of the fire's consequences are still unfolding, officials have expressed suspicions of foul play but have withheld details on their findings or potential suspects. Sources at the scene managed to determine that the fire occurred at The Hills at Fairington complex, a location familiar with the hustle of life south of I-20 near Stonecrest. In addition to the loss of life, 11Alive's Sefenech Henok reported significant damage to at least one unit, with crews continuing their efforts into the early morning around 5:30 a.m., according to 11Alive News.
Firefighters upon their arrival, were quick to launch a counterassault against the blaze and used a ladder to access the second floor, which ended up being a futile rescue attempt for the woman discovered inside. The exact nature of the treatment the man received at the hospital remains uncommunicated, and the identities of both the woman and the man remain unknown at this time.
Investigations into what caused the deadly fire are ongoing as officials hint at foul play. Further developments will emerge as authorities release more information and continue to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the fire.
