A tragic road incident in Louisiana resulted in a fatality over the weekend. According to Louisiana State Police Troop E, Derrick L. Mason, a 54-year-old from Woodworth, died in a crash on U.S. Highway 165, just north of Louisiana Highway 524, early on Sunday morning. The collision occurred around 2:45 a.m., when Mason’s 2020 Freightliner veered off the road and struck several trees before flipping over.
Mason, who authorities say was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, sustained critical injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The precise cause of Mason's loss of control is still under investigation by the police. A routine toxicology sample was taken and has been submitted for analysis to determine if intoxicants played a role in the accident, as reported by the Louisiana State Police Troop E.
In their public statement, the Louisiana State Police Troop E highlighted the perils of distracted and inattentive driving which continue to be significant contributors to roadway accidents in the state. They've reiterated their call for motorists to remain vigilant and focused while on the road, stating that "A lapse in one’s awareness can have deadly consequences," as stated by the Louisiana State Police Troop E.
