In a move to manage financial challenges and continue delivering essential services, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors approved its new budget this week. Chair Mary Vixie Sandy highlighted the commitment to Yolo County residents, "This budget reflects our commitment to maintaining essential services for Yolo County residents while navigating challenging fiscal realities," as per the county's official news release. The balancing act comes at a time when funding sources are volatile, and tough decisions have to be made.
Yolo County Administrator Michael Webb provided insight into the budget process. "While modest increases in property and sales tax revenues helped avoid deeper reductions, cost pressures continue to outpace revenue growth," he explained in a statement released by Yolo County's official site. The budget preparation for the 2025-2026 fiscal year has incorporated updated financial data and reflected the prioritization by the Board of Supervisors, as Webb noted, indicative of the county’s strategy to handle long-term economic challenges.
An unfortunate casualty of the current fiscal climate is the discontinuation of a federal program that Yolo County has long relied upon. The loss of federal support for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) means the county cannot sustain the initiative, resulting in the termination of some county positions. For over 17 years, SNAP-Ed has been instrumental in providing nutritional and health education to the community, a valuable resource in supporting low-income families.
The future includes looking for new funding avenues to replace what’s lost and ensure important services don't fall by the wayside. Yolo County vows to "leverage local resources, collaborate with community, state, and federal partners, advocate for restored or alternative funding sources," aiming to maintain critical services amidst fluctuating financial landscapes. Yolo County’s full 2025–2026 budget details are available for public viewing on their official site.
