Commuters, cyclists, and pedestrians along the coastal stretch between Moss Beach and Half Moon Bay should brace for a fresh surge of construction activity as Caltrans embarks on a major repaving and upgrade project starting November 3. The SR-1 Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project, priced at a hefty $46.7 million, aims to rejuvenate aging infrastructure and enhance accessibility in compliance with ADA standards.
In this slew of roadwork, a key feature will be the introduction of pedestrian curb ramps at prime intersections, including Kelly Avenue and Casa Del Mar Drive, among others. According to Caltrans, these installations are crucial for maintaining safe passage while the area is threaded with construction zones. Installing temporary barriers to clearly delineate between foot traffic and the vehicular lanes, the curbs are set to separate pedestrians from traffic, ensuring a layer of safety during the hustle of construction.
As reported by Caltrans, the SR-1 project's scope is expansive, extending upgrades to guardrails, curbs, crosswalks, and even the incorporation of Class II bike lanes for the green commuters. These bike lanes are destined to line both sides of SR-1, carving out a slice of the road as a salute to sustainability and a nod to the ever-growing community of cyclists.
Beginning as early as the week of October 20, crews will mark their presence near Surfers Beach, gearing up to dive into the workload. Forecasted schedules pin curb ramp construction to initiate within the project limits by November 3. Paving operations could lay their first layer in Half Moon Bay by late November, weather permitting. Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures, but traffic will be maintained through the construction zone at all times, Caltrans has reassured.
