The Ohio Department of Transportation has its sights set on an extensive resurfacing project that will span 1.8 miles along SR 261, impacting both Akron and Norton communities, according to the City of Akron a recent public notice. Groundwork in Akron is designated for V Odom Boulevard from I-77 to Edgewood Avenue, with additional plans to improve curb ramps to bolster pedestrian safety at intersections.

In a targeted effort to enhance road safety and user experience, the stretch of V Odom Boulevard between Frederick Boulevard and Diana Avenue will see a significant transformation, adopting a new layout featuring a centre two-way left turn lane flanked by a singular lane for vehicle movement in each direction and dedicated bike lanes. Although the corridor currently sees daily traffic ranging between 6,000 and 8,000 vehicles, the proposed configuration is not expected to lead to undue congestion; instead, it's aimed at increasing safety, considering the current prevalence of sideswipe collisions that tally up to 17% of accidents.

Local residents and other stakeholders eager to submit their viewpoints or express concerns regarding the resurfacing and restriping plan have a deadline set for November 6. Feedback can be sent electronically to [email protected] or via traditional mail addressed to Christine Jonke at the Akron Engineering Bureau.

Construction is slated to commence in the springtime of 2026, and this forward-looking initiative appears to be a dual boon that not only promotes cyclists' access but also directly addresses vehicle collision types that cumulatively account for more than half of the reported incidents in the area, "both of which can improve using this safety method," the City of Akron's announcement stated.
