A family vacation took an alarming turn at the renowned Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs in Coney Island, with the customers claiming to have found a dangerous object amidst their meal. The incident, which involves an Arizona family, came to light through a TikTok video that has now amassed over 200,000 views. According to CBS News New York, the footage shows a man biting into a hot dog before discovering what appears to be a razor blade. "I'm still in shock… we found a blade inside the hot dog and they claimed it didn't come from them," the video's caption states.
The woman filming, identified by the New York Post as Abbey, explained the supposed sequence of events. "My husband bit into what he initially thought was a hard onion, but it turned out to be a blade inside his food," she said. When they brought the issue to the manager's attention, he reportedly deflected responsibility by suggesting the hot dogs were provided by another Nathan’s location and that the blade could have come from the onions. Abbey was notably distressed by the event, and the manager's reaction, she claimed, "He didn’t even say sorry."
The New York City Department of Health has confirmed through CBS News New York that a 311 complaint was logged regarding the incident and investigations are underway. Public response at Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs has been mixed, with some customers finding it hard to believe such an incident could occur, and others questioning why the family would fabricate the story. The history of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs has been generally positive, with the stand recently attaining an "A" rating after clearing a series of health code violations.
Representatives of Nathan’s have not yet responded to inquires about the incident. Meanwhile, the health department's findings are eagerly anticipated by patrons of the iconic Coney Island establishment, known for its long-standing tradition as the host of the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, dating back to 1916.
