Eastern El Paso County was the scene of an arresting tension last week, when an incident threatening the tranquility of its residents demanded law enforcement intervention. A man armed and seemingly set on robbery jittered through the afternoon air, drawing deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office into a calculated response. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, a call patched through to the Sheriff’s Office Regional Communications Center on Friday at approximately 3:51 PM, set off the chain of events.
Investigators were told that a man, known to the caller, wielded a firearm and forced them out of their vehicle, demanding their keys. The suspect, identified as 56-year-old James Hughes, stayed put, allegedly continuing his threats to "shoot" should the victim attempt flight. Deputies sprinted to the 22000 block of Jones Road, where they circled the wagons and, leveraging drone tech, managed to lay eyes on Hughes without putting themselves in harm's way. "The quick, coordinated response by our deputies and detectives ensured this volatile situation was resolved safely for everyone involved," said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal, as obtained by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
Not merely content with Hughes's detention, detectives pushed further, securing and executing a search warrant at the property and, in the process, uncovering compelling evidence that supported the accusations laid against Hughes. As a consequence, he was booked into the El Paso County Jail on a host of charges, including menacing, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, harassment, and reckless endangerment. Despite the severity of these charges, bond was set, and Hughes found himself released on Sunday, after posting $2,000.00.
