Residents of Athens-Clarke County can look forward to a tidier neighborhood and a more streamlined way to rid their homes of unwieldy items, thanks to the new Bulky Waste Collection Program set to kick off on November 3. As reported by the ACC Solid Waste Department, this initiative is expected to enhance service efficiency for residential customers and contribute to the reduction of illegal dumping, a costly issue that burdens the county with over $1 million in expenses each year, as per the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government.

The program, financed by property taxes, is available to residential customers including single-family homes, duplexes, and fourplex accommodations, spanning across both the General Service and Urban Service Districts. Commercial entities in need of bulk waste disposal can reach out to the ACC Solid Waste Billing Office for specialized assistance. The purpose behind this new venture is clear: to reduce illegal dumping, improve neighborhood cleanliness, ensure appropriate disposal of items, and support the county's recycling and diversion goals, according to Athens-Clarke County Unified Government.

Bulky waste includes large household items such as furniture, tables, chairs, mattresses, and appliances like microwaves, refrigerators, and washing machines. It also covers oversized objects such as large electronics, pianos, and playground equipment. However, the program does not accept construction debris, batteries, or hazardous materials. The initiative aims to reduce illegal dumping that has caused financial strain on the county.

Following the guidelines is essential for the program’s success. Bulky waste should be placed neatly on the curb in designated areas and times, without blocking pathways or creating hazards. Each collection allows up to five items, with residents eligible for four free pick-ups per year. Additional collections come with a $50 fee per trip. Scheduling and details are available through the ACCGov website or by phone.
