A Paulding County man is fighting for his life in intensive care after his dirt bike hit a rut at a deer camp, fishtailed, and threw him over the handlebars, leaving him with two brain bleeds and a fractured skull that required surgery. Chris Upton, a youth baseball coach known to families across the community, was riding with family and friends when the crash happened, and his own children reportedly watched it unfold.
According to WSB-TV, Upton was thrown from the bike and landed about 15 feet away, per his wife Michelle Upton's account. Doctors drilled a hole in his skull to place a drain relieving pressure and swelling on his brain, a procedure medically known as an external ventricular drain, or ventriculostomy, which diverts blood and cerebrospinal fluid to keep swelling from cutting off blood supply to brain tissue, according to Cleveland Clinic. He was flown to a trauma center in Columbus, where he remains heavily sedated and intubated, per Michelle Upton.

Upton suffered two brain bleeds, a broken clavicle, and a broken shoulder blade, according to his wife's account relayed to the station. Garrigus noted the accident happened while Upton was camping with family and friends, and wrote that any donation and every fundraiser share would mean a great deal. Under the Georgia Off-Road Vehicle Act, off-road vehicles operated on private property or designated trails are regulated apart from street-legal motorcycles, meaning the public roadway helmet mandate does not automatically apply to adult riders on private land, according to the Georgia Department of Driver Services. Safety agencies still strongly urge helmet use regardless of where a rider is operating.
