The Dougherty Street Government Building at 120 W. Dougherty Street in Athens will be temporarily closed from today to Friday for roof replacement work, affecting several city departments. According to the Athens-Clarke County Government website, the closure impacts the Planning, Building Permits and Inspections, and Transportation and Public Works departments, which will suspend in-person services during this period.
During the closure, departments will operate remotely and can be reached by email or phone. The Building Permits and Inspections Department will not issue new permits or Certificates of Occupancy but will continue to take next-day inspection requests by phone until 4:00 p.m. each day.
Beginning Thursday, certain offices within the Transportation and Public Works Department located on the lower level — including administrative, engineering, and non-billing stormwater divisions — will reopen. Other areas of the building will remain closed until the roof project is complete.
The Planning Department will continue to accept plan review submissions digitally through its online portal, ensuring deadlines are not affected. Additional information about remote operations is available on each department’s website: accgov.com/planning, accgov.com/buildinginspections, and accgov.com/publicworks.
Normal operations and business hours are expected to resume on Monday next week.
