An Atlanta man, Jeffrey Briney, 61, has been sentenced to eight life terms plus 185 years for multiple sexual assaults committed in 1986. According to the DeKalb District Attorney’s office website, Briney was convicted on September 19 of charges including Rape, Kidnapping, Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. He was sentenced on Thursday last week by DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Tangela Barrie.
The convictions relate to two home invasions, one on March 28 and another on October 27, 1986, during which women were held at gunpoint, sexually assaulted, and their homes ransacked. The cases remained unsolved until DNA testing linked Briney to the crimes in 2023. His brother, David Briney, is connected to other cases and is awaiting trial.
The Georgia Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (GASAKI) Task Force helped process untested sexual assault kits, including 74 from DeKalb County, using advances in DNA technology such as CODIS. The task force’s work contributed to solving these cold cases. More details are available on the DeKalb District Attorney’s official website.
