The Bay Area and Central Coast are bracing for an early-season rainstorm that is forecast to deliver significant precipitation early this week. According to the National Weather Service Forecast Office in San Francisco, CA, expected rainfall amounts range from 0.25 to 1.5 inches in lower elevations and could reach up to 3 inches in mountainous areas.
Beyond the rainfall, "isolated thunderstorms are possible Monday - Tuesday", the NWS San Francisco reports. These may result in lightning strikes, heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and small hail. The Central Coast, in particular, is anticipated to experience minor urban and small stream flooding due to the heaviest rainfall expected in the region.
In a coastal context, the thunderstorm potential is not confined to land. The NWS San Francisco also forecasts "thunderstorms across the coastal waters and the bays Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon." Boaters are advised to shelter as these weather conditions could bring reduced visibility, hail, and even waterspouts, along with lightning and heavy rains.
The NWS San Francisco details the strength of this incoming system: "Winds strongest over the coastal waters however gusty winds will also develop over land with a southward moving cold front during the day." Mariners and residents should prepare for swiftly changing weather conditions, with gales forecasted to occur around the time of frontal passage later today and into early evening. Showers, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, are set to continue into Tuesday.
