The National Weather Service of San Francisco has forecasted a potential mix of weather conditions approaching this weekend for the Bay Area. As per a recent update, a low-pressure system developing in the Gulf of Alaska is expected to gradually shift toward the West Coast, bringing chances of rainfall starting Friday and carrying through into the weekend. As noted by NWS San Francisco, "Rain chances return Friday into the weekend," with the most significant amount of rain likely to affect the North Bay area. While the confidence in the exact forecast is tagged 'low to moderate', residents are advised to stay updated as the situation develops.
In addition to the impending rainfall, a Beach Hazards Statement has been issued, effective through the early hours of Thursday, due to hazardous beach conditions expected along all Pacific Coast beaches. The National Weather Service warns of "breaking waves of 12 to 17 feet and an increased risk for sneaker waves and rip currents." Hotspots like the notorious Mavericks may see wave heights reaching or surpassing the 20 to 25 feet mark. The agency strongly reminds beachgoers to keep a vigilant eye on the ocean to avoid unpredictable dangers.
Meanwhile, the Bay Area also braces to witness isolated thunderstorm activity. According to NWS San Francisco, "A few thunderstorms are possible Tuesday night through Wednesday," with lightning and strong gusty winds as the primary hazards. The agency emphasizes safety by recommending inhabitants seek shelter indoors whenever they hear thunder or see flashes of lightning.
For aviation and marine interests, the forecast brings an added layer of complexity. There's a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms as early as this morning, and these conditions are expected to particularly affect the areas south of San Francisco International Airport (KSFO) and Oakland (KOAK). According to the Area Forecast Discussion released by the NWS, "Ongoing shower and thunderstorm activity will largely be confined to areas south of KSFO/KOAK." Mariners are also advised that gentle to moderate breezes persist, with the potential for isolated gusty winds near the showers and thunderstorms this morning.
