Big changes are coming for Bay Area commuters this December. The Clipper Executive Board has announced a December 10, launch date for the next generation of the renowned Bay Area payment system, Clipper®. According to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, this upgrade is set to streamline the transit fare-payment process by allowing for contactless credit and debit card payments across nearly two dozen transit agencies.
Users can anticipate a range of enhancements slated to make hopping on a bus or train not just easier, but also potentially cheaper, for example, instant value addition to accounts and improved auto-reload functions, ensuring that added passes or funds are ready for immediate use, a notable change from the current system where a lag in value update can leave riders stranded at the gate. During an eight- to 12-week transition period customers will experience these updates gradually, and while this might mean not everyone will have immediate access to all new features, an active effort can be made from the customer’s side by logging into the app, visiting the Clipper website, or calling customer service.
Among the most user-friendly updates are free and discounted transfers. If a journey requires multiple transit agencies within a two-hour period, riders will only be charged a full fare on the first leg, with discounts applied to subsequent legs. Families can rejoice too, the shift to a cloud-based system also means that multiple Clipper card accounts can be managed through a singular app simplifying the logistics of public transit for parents and guardians who are navigating it for more than just themselves.
