The Bay Area is set to receive some much-needed rainfall today, as light to moderate showers are expected to persist throughout the day. The National Weather Service San Francisco's official forecast advises residents to prepare for "periods of light to moderate rain expected through the day." This sprinkle of rain is deemed beneficial, providing some respite against the persisting fire season dangers.
According to the Area Forecast Discussion by the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a cold front approximately 200 miles west of San Francisco brings this mild shower activity. However, the slow-moving nature of the cold front means the rain is set to continue lightly and steadily, hopefully without escalating to hazardous levels. The forecast discusses the atmospheric conditions in detail, noting, "The lapse rates are pretty weak" and "the slow motion of the cold front doesn't support robust updrafts," which implies not to expect significant thunderstorms today.
By Thursday, the rain is anticipated to taper off as the moisture plume pushes south, contributing to a clearer end to the week. The region will experience a shift in winds and a slight chance for convection due to the passing 500 mb trough. The National Weather Service details this upcoming change, stating that "The gradient across the pressure field will support some northerly, offshore wind from Saturday - Monday." Though these winds are traditionally a fire hazard, the prior wet conditions and moderate wind strength should temper the risk.
