The historic Seminole Theatre is set to host a month-long visual arts exhibition celebrating Black identity, thanks to a unique collaboration between The ArtBeat and the City of Homestead's Artist in the Spotlight program. Slated for November 15, the event dubbed "Blackity: Reframing Race, Ethnicity & Nationality Across the Diaspora" aims to invite the community to easily engage in a conversation centered around the potency of representation in art. "This collaboration honors the transformative power of art to inspire, unite, and reframe how we see one another," Councilwoman Jenifer N. Bailey said in a statement obtained by Homestead's official website.
The event, backed by Councilwoman Bailey in partnership with The ArtBeat and Friends of the Seminole Theater, marks its third year with a bold embrace of diverse artistic voices. The 2025 edition, curated in collaboration with ArtWalk Presents, is an attempt to freshly challenge audiences to look beyond traditional narratives. According to the city's official announcement, it features a special opening reception at 18 N. Krome Ave., Homestead, FL, with live performances and opportunities to meet featured artists.
Spearheading the initiative is Ms. Tawana, founding artist of The ArtBeat, who continues to push the bounds of creative expression. The exhibit, which remains on display for one month following the opening, extends a heartfelt invitation for audiences to immerse themselves in the narratives of Black identity through the visual arts. From interpretations of race to diaspora dynamics, the artwork showcased at the Seminole Theatre encapsulates a global perspective on the significance of roots, identity, and belonging.
For those interested in the broader Artist in the Spotlight program, which has been accentuating local artistry since 2010, submissions are welcome from Broward, Dade, or Monroe Counties. Homestead City Council first introduced the program with the intention to specifically spotlight local artists, allowing them to exhibit their artwork within the community. Artists living in or near the City of Homestead are given preference. Potential participants and those knowing artists that may want to be featured can look to contact Councilwoman Bailey’s office at [email protected] with contact information and samples of their work, as they pointed out in the announcement.
