An 80-year-old Bonita woman, identified as Maris Johnston, died following a single-vehicle accident on Louisiana Highway 599 in Morehouse Parish, as per a report by Louisiana State Police. The crash, which occurred yesterday, is still under investigation, but early findings indicate Johnston's vehicle veered off the road and overturned after striking an embankment.
Johnston was driving a 2024 Ford Expedition southbound when the incident took place shortly after 3:00 p.m., near Bernie Turner Road. It is reported that she was not using her seatbelt at the time of the accident,, a factor that consistently proves pivotal in the severity of injuries sustained in crashes. Although not immediately believed to be a factor, impairment has not been ruled out while toxicology samples have been collected for analysis.
While it is yet to be confirmed if neglecting this safety measure directly contributed to the severity of Johnston's injuries, the accident serves as a somber reminder, that seat belts significantly increase the chances of surviving a crash. Further details on the investigation will be shared once made available by the authorities.
