In the quiet of the early morning, Brighton became the backdrop for an unsettling home intrusion. Boston Police, responding to a breaking and entering report, apprehended a suspect near the scene. The incident occurred on Sunday, at around 2:25 a.m., when officers from District D-14 (Allston/Brighton) were dispatched to 19 Chester Street after a homeowner experienced a chilling encounter with a stranger reaching through her bedroom window, according to the Boston Police Department.
Despite an initial search that turned up empty, detectives did manage to find evidence at the scene. Victim stated that "she was closing her bedroom window when it suddenly reopened and a hand reached inside," as reported Boston Police Department. It was following this disturbing event that officers and detectives noted torn window screens and visible handprints on the glass. The perpetrator had fled, but not for long.
While detectives and officers were reviewing the scene, a man matching the suspect’s description returned. When officers tried to question him, he ran away, but they caught him after a short chase, as per the Boston Police Department.
Police later found the suspect at 1094 Commonwealth Avenue. He tried to run again, but officers caught him quickly. The man, identified as 39-year-old Renato De Oliveira of Brighton, has been charged with nighttime breaking and entering and trespassing. He will be arraigned in Brighton District Court, as obtained by the Boston Police Department.
Residents and local authorities remain vigilant in the wake of this episode, a stark reminder of the fragility of peace in even the seemingly quietest neighbourhoods. The charges laid against De Oliveira serve as a testament to the responsiveness of the Boston Police and their ongoing commitment to community safety.
