British journalist Sami Hamdi was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), en route to a speaking event for the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The organization, which had hosted Hamdi at a Sacramento gala the previous evening, strongly condemned the detention as a violation of free speech. "Abducting a prominent British Muslim journalist and political commentator on a speaking tour in the United States because he dared to criticize the Israeli government’s genocide is a blatant affront to free speech," a CAIR statement said, according to CAIR's press release.
In contrast, Assistant Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin labeled Hamdi a national security threat. "Those who support terrorism and undermine American national security will not be allowed to work or visit this country," she wrote in a post. Her statements echo claims by individuals and groups, including Laura Loomer and RAIR International, which have accused Hamdi of ties to Islamist groups. This allegation has not been substantiated in a court of law. RAIR went as far as claiming Hamdi's presence on U.S. soil to be in furtherance of expanding a hostile foreign political network, according to a report by The SF Standard.
The context of Hamdi's detention includes a recent series of deportations targeting critics of Israel. Two Palestinian men were turned away at SFO earlier this year, with a subsequent act of violence in the West Bank claiming one of the men's lives. CAIR insists that these actions represent an agenda prioritizing foreign policy alignment over American values of free expression.
Laura Loomer, a prominent right-wing figure, publicly celebrated the action against Hamdi on social media. "Sami Hamdi is a supporter of HAMAS and the Muslim Brotherhood," Loomer said, per The SF Standard. "He's a jihadi. You're lucky his only fate is being arrested and deported." Meanwhile, Sean Maguire of Sequoia, a venture capital firm, alleged without presenting evidence that Hamdi had instituted a campaign targeting him for his support of Israel. In a social media post, Maguire claimed Hamdi directed people to use AI to auto-generate unique emails to send to our LPs.
